Content is king, but exposure is everything.
So, you’ve finished your latest book, and you’re ready to share it with the world.
But, there’s a problem.
You don’t know how to best get quality exposure for yourself and your content.
Well now, I’m going to share with you 8 free and effective ways to get the quality exposure you need to succeed as an indie author:
1. Enter the Writer Spectacle
Did you know there’s a free opportunity for you to get exposure right here on this website?
That’s right! It’s called the Writer Spectacle.
Every thirty days, we feature 8-10 authors on the official Luster Lexicon website and mailing list for free as a way of giving back to the writing community.
Click here to learn about how to enter.
2. Comment on Related Blogs
Leaving a comment is a simple and effective way to get quality exposure. But, they have to be done right.
Make sure to leave comments that show gratitude or provide value in some way. Doing so can lead to strong connections with other writers.
If you need to find good blogs to comment on but don’t know where to go, start with Google.
I recommend searching using parameters that are related to your genre. For example, if you primarily write Sci-Fi, you can search “sci-fi author blogs.” You want to find blogs that have some degree of comment activity already that way you know your comments will likely be seen.
Once you’ve found some blogs, check out the other bloggers who’ve also left comments and connect with them too.
3. Join Facebook Groups
One of the first things I did to get quality exposure as an indie author was to reach out to fellow writers and readers on social media, particularly Facebook.
Through Facebook groups, I’ve met some wonderful authors and received quality feedback on my early written work. This helpfulness inspired the creation for the Luster Lexicon’s Facebook Group. Feel free to join here.
Here are some other groups that I’ve had great experiences with: Authors and BooksGoSocial.
4. Reply to Tweets
If you’re not on Twitter start using it right now. It’s a time-effective way to expand your reach.
You want to follow authors in your genre, influencers, and potential readers whom you’d believe take interest in your writing. Genuinely take interest in them and what they’re tweeting about.
Be sure to leave meaningful replies to their tweets. Don’t spam or leave copypasted replies. It’s easy to see through and is bad for your reputation in the long run.
Need some help with leaving meaningful replies? This article on Social Media Examiner goes into a little more detail on how to get your tweets (and retweets) noticed. The article’s a couple years old, but the advice they give here is still optimal for 2019!
5. Answer Questions on Quora
Do you have expertise on editing, formatting, storytelling, or any other subject? You should start answering questions on Quora! Others would love to hear what you have to say.
Quora is a great yet overlooked way to get quality exposure as an indie author. As I type this article, there are over 300 million monthly users!
You read right. 300 million monthly users. Think of how much potential exposure there is for you, all by answering some questions.
A word of advice. Be thorough.
High-quality answers that are accurate will get you noticed and appreciated by the community.
6. Join Tapas
Tapas is an established community that’s essentially made for indie authors like you and me.
You can share your novels and even comics with a large, eager audience.
And you can even get paid for your work!
As you build your readership, members can tip you in the form of donations known as “ink.” You can then convert this ink into cash via PayPal. It’s completely free to join Tapas, so there’s no reason not to check it out!
Here is the link to join Tapas.
7. Add Author Information to Your E-mail Signature
This is a simple, quick, but often overlooked way to get exposure for authors. If you haven’t done this already, do it. It’ll only take you a minute, and whomever you e-mail will have an opportunity to learn about your writing content.
I recommend posting a brief blurb that defines you and what you write. Try to keep it a sentence or two at most.
Don’t forget to include two of your most used social media links below the blurb!
8.Free Giveaways
Lastly, among the 8 free and fast ways to get quality exposure as an indie author, we have free giveaways.
Who doesn’t like getting something for free? Especially when it’s valuable like your writing!
Free giveaways are great for getting your initial audience. However, once you do get your initial audience, I recommend scaling back on free giveaways.
Why?
Because if you giveaway too much too often, it can easily devalue your work.
Nonetheless, free giveaways are still highly effective when done properly and in moderation.
Here are some places where you can do giveaways:
1. Amazon.com via KDP Select
2. Prolificworks.com
3. Social Media
4. In person to potential readers at author or book-related events, book clubs, meetups, etc.
If you’re looking for a little detail on how to do an online giveaway that is optimal, read this article here.
